Like Sebastian Junger’s book Fire, Cheating Death is a compilation of first person accounts of near death survival situations in Alaska. While it is very readable and useful for the same reasons as Junger’s book, it is not as well written. After reading some eighteen chapters outlining near death situations in boating and fishing accidents and various bush pilot air disasters, I came away thinking, why would anyone want to live there and put himself in such jeopardy?
Like Fire, this is a good book to grab when you can’t get into a long, can’t put it down, tale. It’s great for travel, camping or busy times when you just want something short to read.
