When I built my kit boat, Pinguino, I used a fine saw blade to cut out the hatch covers. As a result, they fit very tightly, which is mostly a good thing. Tight hatches look neat and leak less. But they can be a bugger to remove, especially after being toggled down all day. My hatches were so thigh that I sometimes had to use a knife blade to lift them.
My solution as shown in this video, was ti make loops out of the same material that the hatch toggles are made ofI screwed these to the hatch covers, keeping them mostly covered by the hatch toggles themselves. The video below gives a good demonstration of how these work.
